About Me
Hi there, my name is Charlie. I am a web developer that specializes in making accessible user interfaces for all people to explore the web. I enjoy working with small businesses and I work hard to help establish their brands and diversify content on the web.
I try to keep things simple whenever I create a site. I stick to working with vanilla JavaScript and CSS and encorporate semantic HTML tags to leverage as much of the power I can from what is natively supported in a browser. I utilize Google's lighthouse toolset, or PageSpeed Insights to evaluate several metrics for anything I create, including performance, accessibility and SEO rankings. I feel for a site to be successful on the modern web it needs to be accessible, responsive, and quick.
How I Got Here
For the last 10 years I have been working as a web developer. In that time I have worked for 2 web agencies and freelanced creating websites for several businesses. You can see more of my freelance work in my portfolio. For the majority of my development career I have been using .Net Webforms. More recently I have started to work with .Net Core and SvelteKit. This very site has been one of my first forays into the SvelteKit framework and I have enjoyed putting it all together.
I graduated from Western Carolina University in 2016 with a Computer Science degree. I helped tutor fellow classmates in web and software development applications and quickly learned that I was in it to solve puzzles. I enjoy the logical flow of breaking down a task into sub tasks to find a solution to whatever problem I was working on.
What About Fun?
Nowadays, I spend most of my freetime hiking or biking. Western North Carolina is a great place for that. Plenty of trails, parks, and rivers to explore.
I am a bit of DIY'er, I have dabbled in many things including:
- Woodworking
- Gardening / Landscaping
- PC Modding
- Cooking
YouTube has been an amazing resource in getting started on doing just about anything. You can checkout some of my creations in my blog.
